NEH Externships/Seeing Practice

Newmarket Equine Hospital runs an externship program for veterinary students. We would like to invite students with a strong interest in entering the equine veterinary profession for a 2-week placement split between The Hospital and The Practice with accommodation provided at NEH.

Newmarket Equine Hospital is a Hospital and Ambulatory practice serving the local Thoroughbred breeding and training population and wider non thoroughbred clientele together with a domestic and international referrals service. The Hospital has 8 Diploma holding veterinary specialists covering orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, internal medicine and sports medicine and rehabilitation. There are regular visiting specialists in anaesthesia and analgesia. The seven resident interns will facilitate your time within the hospital and accommodation will be provided in the interns houses. The ambulatory practice has over 20 veterinarians, a number who have Diplomas or RCVS Certificates in various fields.

The externship is structured over two weeks. One week will be spent rotating through the ambulatory practice, seeing stud, racing and sports and leisure work. The other week you will be based in the hospital, seeing surgical and medical cases, complex lameness workups, anaesthesia and surgery. Some of our work is seasonal, such as the stud work and racing work – please take this into account with your booking if you have an interest in a specific area.

You will be emailed before you arrive with a timetable of your programme for the week. The usual week is from Monday to Saturday midday. The working day starts at 8am, but you may be asked to start earlier some days, particularly when going on ambulatory calls. You are encouraged to join for emergency admissions to the hospital out of hours.

Please apply with a copy of your CV to externships@neh.uk.com

Work Experience

We also accept school pupils (aged 15 or above) who are interested in a career in equine nursing or veterinary science on work experience placements. These may be part of their formal school work experience or arranged informally during school/college vacations. Students will work alongside the veterinary nursing team in the clinic. Please apply in writing to the head nurse, Sophie Haylock (e-mail: pharmacy@neh.uk.com)

Services

Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedics is the largest surgical discipline at NEH and concerns principally joints and bones, with the most common procedures including arthroscopic surgery and fracture repair.

Internal Medicine

Conditions treated by our internal medicine team include diseases of the airways, heart, intestines, liver, kidneys and circulatory system.

Soft Tissue Surgery

The major disciplines in equine soft tissue surgery include abdominal (colic) surgery, airway, and urogenital surgery.

Colic

Colic is one of the most common surgical emergencies in the horse, and success revolves around a highly trained rapid response team.

Wind Surgery & Breathing Problems

Breathing problems are a surprisingly common cause of poor performance in the horse.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is a term used to describe methods which allow us to visualise structures and activities inside the body.

Lameness & Poor Performance

We understand the frustrations involved when a horse’s ability to perform at expected levels is impaired. Our experienced clinicians can systematically assess the potential causes and advise on treatment.

Rehabilitation

An athletic injury can result in a prolonged period out of training with consequential physical restrictions for the whole horse.

Dentistry

Equine dental disease manifests in numerous ways, from difficulty in eating and nasal discharge to more subtle bitting and performance-related issues.

Farriery

Consultant farrier Will O’Shaughnessy holds the Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF) Diploma in Farriery
