Fully equipped laboratory
The laboratory is fully equipped to meet the diagnostic requirements of the equine veterinary profession.
Haematology & biochemistry
The laboratory’s haematology and biochemistry analysers carry equine veterinary software providing fast, accurate, and quality-controlled results on blood samples, with reference ranges. Results are normally available on the same day if samples are received by 12 noon.
Haematological results are provided by automated analysers in combination with manual film reading to ensure accuracy of results. The laboratory offers individual tests including quantitative IgG measurements and protein electrophoresis, as well as a variety of comprehensive profiles which can be tailored to meet your needs.
Endocrine testing
The NEH laboratory are also pleased to offer progesterone, ACTH and insulin blood testing. These tests are run on an Immulite® 2000 XPi, which provides accurate, same day results.
Cytology
Cytology is an important technique in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases and is performed on samples such as tracheal washes, joint fluid, peritoneal fluid, and cervical smears. The laboratory uses automated analysers in combination with manual film reading to obtain nucleated cell count results. When submitting fluid samples for cytological examination, EDTA samples are preferable for nucleated cell count, a sterile container is required for bacterial culture and a serum tube for measurement of total protein concentration.
Microbiology
The laboratory test for a range of bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens. Swabs taken for culture should be taken into Amies charcoal transport medium (ACTM). In the case of genital swabs, samples should arrive at the laboratory within 48 hours of being taken. Faecal and fluid samples should be collected in sterile containers. Blood culture media is available on request.
Bacterial culture and susceptibility testing
Routine bacteriology samples such as swabs and body fluids will be cultured under aerobic, microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions as appropriate. Antibiotic sensitivity testing is performed where potential pathogens are isolated. Preliminary results are generally ready within 48 hours of receipt of sample.
Respiratory PCR testing
NEH Laboratory is pleased to offer rapid PCR testing for the diagnosis of infectious respiratory disease. PCR testing is available for Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, EHV-1 and -4, and equine influenza. Results are normally available same day if samples are received before 10am.
Faecal testing
We offer faecal culture for aerobic and microaerophilic pathogens including Salmonella, as well as faecal rotavirus testing for foals. As faecal pathogens are often shed intermittently, therefore we suggested submitting a pooled sample collected over three days to improve reliability of results.
Breeding
Reproductive PCR testing
Genital swabs are routinely cultured for Taylorella equigenitalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. All Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates will be typed to ascertain pathogenicity. PCR testing is available for Taylorella equigenitalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa within 24 hours of receipt of samples. Both culture and PCR methods are registered with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Laboratory Registration scheme and official BEVA certificates are issued promptly.
EVA and EIA serology
The laboratory offers fast and accurate screening for EVA and EIA by ELISA. These tests are run daily at the height of the breeding season and run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday thereafter.
Dermatology
Microscopic examination of skin scrapings and hair plucks are performed to identify parasites or dermatophytes (ringworm). Bacterial culture of swabs from skin lesions may also form part of the dermatological investigation.
Parasitology
The use of faecal worm egg counts and faecal worm egg reduction tests are an important tool in the routine management of both individual and groups of horses, especially in the face of increasing anthelmintic resistance.
